NFL Playoff Surge: Rookie Cards of Top QBs Reach Record Auction Values

The NFL playoffs not only serve as a battleground for the best quarterbacks in the league, but they also bring about a surge in the value of their rookie cards in the world of sports memorabilia. As the dust settles on the 2023-24 NFL playoffs, collectors and enthusiasts are flocking to online auctions to acquire rare rookie cards of the final four quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes II, Brock Purdy, Lamar Jackson, and Jared Goff.

The AFC Championship game promises an electrifying clash between Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs’ two-time Super Bowl champion, and Jackson, the dynamic and leading candidate for the 2023 NFL MVP award. On the other side, the NFC championship features Purdy and Goff, both ranking among the top five quarterbacks in passing yards and boasting impressive records in touchdown passes.

In the thrilling realm of sports collectibles, these four quarterbacks’ rookie cards have become the center of attention in online auctions throughout January. Notable highlights include an autographed Panini National Treasures Black card from 2017 featuring Patrick Mahomes, which fetched an astounding $19,300 after receiving 62 bids. Likewise, a signed Panini Contenders Rookie Ticket card, graded BGS 9.5, sold for an impressive $16,577 from 51 bids.

Brock Purdy’s rookie cards have also been in high demand, with his 2022 Playoff Contenders signed Rookie Ticket “Cracked Ice” variation, graded PSA 10 and limited to just 22 copies, selling for $10,268 across 27 bids. This is in line with previous sales of Purdy’s rookie cards, such as the 2022 National Treasures signed patch card, graded PSA 9, which brought in $15,000 from 53 bids.

Lamar Jackson’s rookie cards have seen significant action as well, with a Gem-Mint 2018 Panini Prizm Black Finite card soaring to an astonishing $51,100 with 76 bids. Another coveted Jackson item, a 2018 National Treasures autographed patch card numbered #27/99 and graded BGS 9.5, fetched an impressive $18,000 across 39 bids.

Despite experiencing a mixed start in his career with the Rams and subsequently joining the Lions, Jared Goff has been capturing growing interest in his rookie cards. A 2019 Panini Absolute Kaboom! card, featuring a gold variation marked #6/10, sold for an impressive $3,049 across 50 bids. In addition, a 2016 Donruss Optic Gold Prizm rookie card, graded BGS 10 and marked #2/10, reached an impressive $2,950 from 32 bids.

The NFL playoffs have not only provided captivating performances on the field but have also caused a seismic shift in the sports memorabilia market. As these top quarterbacks continue to shine on the gridiron, their rookie cards have become highly sought-after items, commanding record-breaking prices in online auctions. Collectors and enthusiasts alike will be eagerly watching as these rising stars hope to further elevate the value and prestige of their rookie cards.
