Rare Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth Cards Shine at Auction

In the recent Heritage Spring Sports Card Auction, collectors and enthusiasts worldwide gathered to witness the excitement and frenzy surrounding the sale of iconic sports memorabilia. Among the standout lots were the rare T206 Ty Cobb card and the sought-after Babe Ruth rookie card, both fetching impressive sums and reaffirming the enduring appeal of vintage sports cards.

The T206 Ty Cobb card, featuring a tobacco advertisement back and boasting a glossy finish, captured the attention of bidders with its unique characteristics and scarcity. With only around 25 known to exist, this particular card’s association with Cobb’s tobacco brand and distinctive design propelled its selling price to an astonishing $432,000, surpassing even the renowned Honus Wagner card in rarity.

Adding to the allure of the auction was the M101-5 Sporting News Blank Back Babe Ruth rookie card, which closed at an impressive $348,000. The lone PSA 4 graded Babe Ruth rookie card from this series commanded the spotlight, showcasing the timeless appeal and investment value of cards featuring baseball legends.

Other notable sales included a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, fetching $204,000, and a 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card, selling for $210,000. The diverse range of cards and memorabilia offered at the auction attracted over 2,450 bidders, leading to total sales exceeding $10 million.

One of the auction’s highlights was the sale of a signed 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card, recognized for its rarity and historical significance. With only 31 signed copies known to exist, this card sold for an impressive $126,000, demonstrating the enduring appeal of authenticated autographed memorabilia.

The auction also showcased collectors’ interest in unopened materials, as evidenced by the sale of a 1967 Topps Football cello box and a 1970 Topps baseball (Mixed Series) cello box, each fetching $81,000. Additionally, a Jackie Robinson UCLA football debut ticket stub exceeded expectations, selling for $22,800.

One of the most remarkable stories from the auction was the estate sale discovery of eight 1914 Lawrence Semon issue postcards, including a Ty Cobb card. A mere $400 investment in these postcards resulted in an astounding return of $50,370, underscoring the potential for unexpected finds and hidden gems in the vintage card market.
