Heritage Icons Photography Auction Showcases Signed Mikan Rookie Card Photo

Heritage Auctions has unveiled a remarkable selection of autographed vintage sports photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction. Among the prized items up for grabs is a 1948 photograph featuring basketball legend George Mikan, the very image mirrored on his 1948 Bowman rookie card. This captivating 8×10 Type 1 photo captures Mikan in action, adorned with his signature in striking blue ink, expected to command bids exceeding $20,000.

The theme of signed vintage sports photos continues throughout the auction, with notable items such as a late 1940s photograph of Cleveland Browns icon Otto Graham. This image mirrors the one featured on his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card and bears his distinctive signature. Equally impressive is the autographed 1949 photo of Jackie Robinson, commemorating his receipt of the Silver Bat for winning the National League batting title, the same year he clinched the MVP title. This particular Type I photo, personalized to “Jeff,” holds significant historical value.

Another stirring image of Robinson from 1957 captures the moment he cleared out his locker at Ebbets Field upon retiring from baseball. The photo showcases his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, alongside two bats, one of which belonging to Gil Hodges. Anticipated to garner bids in excess of $10,000, this piece offers fans a poignant glimpse into a pivotal moment in Robinson’s career.

The auction also features a photograph that served as the basis for Willie Mays’ iconic 1952 Topps card, complete with Mays’ signature adorning the front, believed to have been signed during the 1990s.

With over 150 vintage images gracing the online catalog, some dating back over a century, the auction presents a diverse array of historical sports photography. Included is a compelling photo from the 1919 World Series, capturing a moment of sportsmanship between Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther as they shake hands before a notorious game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Featuring the original paper caption and stamps on the back, this image is slated to commence bidding at $8,000.

Other standout lots include rookie photographs of sports legends like Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970), alongside an assortment of images showcasing the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other pre-war sports icons.

Running until June 13, the auction offers collectors and sports enthusiasts alike a rare chance to own a piece of sports history immortalized through captivating photography. Explore the extensive collection and delve into the rich tapestry of iconic moments captured within these signed vintage sports photographs.
